HSO Projects Spring 2010
SGU HSO Projects Spring 2010
HSO has two Projects:
1 – Home - Visit Home-Bound Patients in Grenada
2 – Health - Teaching in Grenadian Schools
Project #1
Grenada's population is electric: geographically, socially and medically. The healthcare provided by the local government is free to all, but difficult to physically access by many, especially those in more remote areas. The local parish of Woburn/Woodlands has identified members of their population who could use looking in on, either due to present medical conditions, past medical issues, or social isolation. HSO volunteers, under the guidance of the Woburn/Woodlands Development Organization, conduct wellness checks of these pre-screened citizens. Our home health program provides the local people with an opportunity to discuss issues surrounding their health status, as well as introduce their families and friends to students from different countries. HSO volunteers, in turn, have the occasion to apply their patient interview skills, to practice taking basic vital signs and to become more culturally competent practitioners.
Project #2
At the invitation of a local school, HSO Health Education volunteers conduct seminars on mental, physical and sexual health. Health educators have been charged by the school administration with detailing how certain behaviors can result in disease, how such behaviors can be avoided, how to identify diseases that are common in the community, and how to protect oneself from contracting and communicating various illnesses. HSO volunteers have seen schoolchildren in several forms, teach males separately from females, and do Question & Answer sessions with the students after discussions. We solicit feedback from students about what they've learned, and integrate it into an improved teaching format for the next series of classes. Contact info:
