Alumni Mentoring Program
Share |

SGU offers three exciting programs that forge deep connections and strengthen the positions of our alumni and students in the medical world and market-place: the Alumni Mentoring, Alumni Shadowing, and Alumni Hosting programs.

The programs engage alumni from the School of Medicine and students in their third and fourth year of medical training.  The programs augment the existing Career Adviser Program offered through the Office of Career Guidance and Student Development.

Mentoring offers alumni the opportunity to share their knowledge and act as a role model, while giving students the opportunity to interact and be guided by an alumnus in their field of interest.  Most mentoring takes place via phone or internet communication, though person-to-person contact is encouraged wherever possible.

Shadowing consists of direct physician-student interaction.  By physically shadowing the alumnus, the student is exposed to the realities of medicine, while gaining allowing perspective and experience on what practicing medicine entails.

Hosting consists of the alumnus hosting clinical year students who have to travel for residency interviews that are in the area of the alumnus’ home.

At the end of the semester, both alumnus and student complete an evaluation of their experience which is used to further enhance the programs.
