SOMAA - Grenada Chapter!

A Letter from the President

As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations for the St. George’s University the St. George’s University School of Medicine Alumni Association formed the Grenada Chapter in April 2007. This was done through the initiative of the current President of the Alumni Association Dr. Linda Klokow during her visit in January 2007. Since then there has been no looking back.

It was with some surprise that we discovered that there were approximately 35 graduates living and working on the island of Grenada. This is a significant portion of the 110 plus Grenadian graduates from the school of medicine.  We have members from as early as 1984 and as recently as 2007.  During the first few months the chapter was registered as a non-profit organization, an executive was elected, goals defined and a fundraiser was held.

The Executive Members are as follows:

President: Dr. Nicole Perrotte

Secretary: Dr. Earlyne Thomas

Treasurer: Dr. Johansen Sylvester

Public Relations Officer: Dr. E. Francis Martin

Floor members: Dr. Angela Benjamin

                          Dr. Dolland Noel

                          Dr. Carlene Radix

                          Dr. Alena Wade

The chapter came up with four goals which will be the foundation on which projects will carried out. The goals are 1) Fellowship/kinship with Alumni – Grenada, Regional and International; 2) CME and training for health professionals (SGU & non-SGU); 3) Mentoring students in the Caribbean Community and 4) Community Outreach and Education.

Our first major fundraiser was held on October 24th, 2007 in the form of a dinner and a dance under the patronage of the Governor General Sir Danny and Lady Williams. The event took place at their residence in Westerhall St. David’s. The function was a success. The local community and SGU contributed to the success of this venture. On behalf of the Grenada Chapter I would like to thank everyone who supported us in our venture.  Due to the success of the venture it was decided by the chapter that this will become an annual event. The funds raised will be used for providing dialysis access for several End Stage Renal Disease patients. Several patients will have vascular access placed in February by a visiting vascular surgeon. Information on this will follow shortly.

During the course of the next 3 months, the Grenada Chapter will be embarking upon several projects namely Basic Life Support project, Have a Heart fundraiser and a public lecture.

The public lecture is carded for January 30th at 530 pm in Charter Hall. It will be done by a visiting cardiologist involved in the CardioStart program. The lecture is geared at the general public and the topic is "Have you had a heart attack? Your diet could be killing you. How safe are you? "The lecture will be followed by a question and answer segment for the audience. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Together with the entire Chapter, I ask for your continuing support in the New Year as we endeavor to meet our goals.

Nicole Perrotte, MD
